What's the first food that comes to mind when calcium is said? Milk! But there are many other food sources that calcium comes from. That is what our lesson was about this week.
We played Calcium bingo. The bingo cards had many different foods on it that contained calcium. Some foods that I was unaware had calcium in them were papaya, figs, tofu, molasses, almonds, and sesame seeds. We played two rounds and had prizes for the winners. It was so funny to see the children's faces when we showed them the prizes, a watermelon and a pineapple. We had a lot of fun with the game and they enjoyed playing.
After we were all done playing Calcium bingo we made a juice for the kids. We used ingredients that all contain calcium. We put spinach, orange juice, pineapple (although it does not have calcium, it tastes really good!) and kiwi. It was delicious. Most of the children "ew"ed the spinach but once they tried it, they liked it. They couldn't even taste the spinach!
My highlight this week was trying sardines, which have calcium as well! My whole life I have always been so grossed out about sardines but they were definitely not as bad as I thought they would be. The smell of them is much more potent than the taste. They remind me of tuna. Have you tried sardines?
