This week I tried to make hot chocolate using food commodities. It actually came out pretty good. In the pictures below you can see the steps I took when making it. The only thing I would suggest is to sift the hot cocoa mix before adding the water. Some of the bigger flakes in the dried milk did not dissolve all the way. Other than that, it was really delicious and definitely hit the spot on my snow day.
Ingredients:
2/3 cup of instant nonfat dry milk
1 3/4 cups of water
1/2 cup of sugar
1/4 cup of chocolate powder cocoa
1/4 cup of marshmallows (optional)
Using food commodities while cooking can be a big help. For example, if I did not have milk readily in my fridge when a recipe calls for it, I can always make it with the dried milk. For that reason, when grocery shopping this past week, I bought dried milk. The US government runs a program called Commodity Supplemental Food Program, or CSFP . They provide food commodities to CSFP state agencies. The program helps low income pregnant or breastfeeding women, infants, children up to six years old, and the elderly aged 60 and above.
