Today's class was a lot of fun. We played a game that was developed in Microsoft PowerPoint by our instructor, Josh. All of the kids were split up into five groups, one for each category on the MyPlate. As the game was being set up, we made a trail mix for the children to enjoy as they were playing the game. The trail mix we made had freshly air popped popcorn, crushed sour cream rice cakes, pretzels, dried blueberries, craisins, and raisins. We portioned out the trail mix into cups,so each child could have their own cup. They loved it and devoured it before the game even started. Mid game we went around and gave them another helping if they wanted more.
Once the game was all set up, Josh and Shirley explained the game and lead the game. I did a demonstration to show the kids how the game worked. In each of the categories there were foods that belonged to that group.. Each of the foods had a game hyperlinked with it The games ranged from dance offs, to challenges, to guess the food, to what does not belong, along with other games. All the groups who participated and got the right answer, got a point. Everyone was doing really well but one group won. As a prize we packed a mango, an orange, a tomato stress ball, and a water canteen into an insulated reusable bag.
Unfortunately that was out last week at Buckley Elementary School in Manchester, but I will be looking forward to working with more children at the next site!
